Department of Architectural Engineering consists of
'Architectural Structure' and 'Architectural and Urban Design'

Architectural Structure
Structural Mechanics and Dynamics (Lab.1)
Concrete Structure (Lab.2)
Steel Structures (Lab.6)

Architectural and Urban Design
Architectural and Urban Planning (Lab.3)
Architectural and Urban Environmental Engineering (Lab.4)
Architectural and Urban Ergonomics (Lab.5)
Architectural Morphology (Lab.7)

We aim at improving earthquake-resistant performance of buildings. Our research topics are seismic performance of wooden structures, base isolation system and soil improvement method, dynamic soil-structure interaction and earthquake ground motion simulation.

Our research group mainly studies seismic performance of concrete building structures: reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel-concrete composite, and masonry through experimental, analytical, and theoretical approaches. Research interests also cover design methodology for new construction, seismic retrofit for substandard existing buildings, and field investigation on earthquake damage.

Architectural Planning, Urban Design, Environmental Behavior
Socio-spatial phenomena in spaces and places are analyzed to develop new theories for planning and design, based on environmental behavior studies and comprehension of area's context. Research themes cover following matters; 1) social and spatial system in villages, cities, and communities, 2) design methodology and theories, 3) spatial cognition and affordance, 4) environmental design for children, elderly and handicapped people, 5) action research for actual communities, 6) common space and 'Ibasyo' in urban environment.

Architectural environmental engineering
Our mission is the achievement and maintaining of the healthy and comfortable indoor environment, moreover workable and high productivity environment. Human physiology and sensation is governed by a stimulus of the heat, air, light, sound etc. from the environment. To clarify the comfortable indoor condition for human being, the relationship between the environmental stimulus and its human response should be solved. The technique to simulate and analyze the physical condition of indoor environment is developed as well.

We have carried out our own research aimed at the planning methods to design architecture and urban facilities by finding the behavioral traits of human beings in architectural and urban spaces, and by analyzing the correlations of space compositions and human behaviors. In addition, we undertake theoretical and practical research on the architectural/urban design with a viewpoint of global environmental issues and the space planning methods for the aged and the disabled.

This Laboratory is involved in design of architectural morphology risk management, and evaluation of urban infrastructure, while providing a computer-aided design and graphic science education. We are aims to propose the future vision for architectural design and urban social design regarding a sustainable development.
